Local Infrastructure Improvements (Rancho Chico & Taft)

Project Information

Funding Source: Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery (Hurricane Harvey DR-4332)
Funded Amount: $2,037,215
State Agencies: General Land Office
Local Agencies: San Patricio County Emergency Management, San Patricio County Engineer, San Patricio County Drainage District, San Patricio County Precinct 3, San Patricio County Precinct 1

Currently, the drainage systems within the Rancho Chico and Algodon Colonia (Taft) subdivisions are inadequately sized, outdated and continue to deteriorate with every heavy rain event. Many drainage channels are undersized and post Hurricane Harvey are now either obstructed or silted in, and in some cases non-existent. These drainage ways no longer adequately function properly, causing storm water to sheet flow through the streets compromising their integrity, and creating property damage. Hurricane Harvey rains inundated these two subdivisions. During the storm, the drainage systems were unable to handle the amount of sheet flow making the areas vulnerable to flooding. Drainage system improvements are needed to redirect water and disperse it away from homes and prevent the flooding from submerging streets causing extensive damage.

For this project the County will provide the following improvements:

Rancho Chico – The County will provide for improved drainage in the Rancho Chico Colonia consisting of the installation of 270 LF of 18 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, 360 LF of 24 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, 65 LF of 30 inch diameter of reinforced concrete pipe, and 2,920 LF of 36 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe. The County will also install 8 junction boxes, 40 grate inlets, cut/restore approximately 1,660 SY of street pavement and regrade of existing ditches.

Algodon (Taft) – The County will provide for improved drainage in the Algodon Colonia consisting of the installation of 800 LF of 18 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, 1,400 LF of 24 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe, 2,460 LF of 30 inch diameter of reinforced concrete pipe, and 3,000 LF of 36 inch diameter reinforced concrete pipe. The County will also install 40 grate inlets, and regrade existing ditches.
